Master of Arts
in Theological Studies
(MATS)
The Master of Arts in Theological Studies degree provides a fuller mastery of one area or discipline of theological study than is normally provided at the MDiv level. The program may serve a variety of aims: further graduate study, preparation for the doctoral level, preparation for some forms of teaching, the scholarly enhancement of ministerial practice, or disciplined reflection on a specialized function in ministry. This degree is built upon a baccalaureate degree in religion or theology and has certain prerequisites necessary for admission into an MATS specialization.

Program Description
The Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) is a graduate degree designed for those called to teach God’s word and desiring a greater level of study in a specific concentration. As a result, the MAT program is very flexible, allowing for concentrations in one of three areas:
- Scripture and Witness
- Faith and Heritage
- Ministry and Formation
All courses required for the MAT degree program are offered Online.
Program Goals
The central goals (adapted from ATS standard 4.10) of the Carroll Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) degree, as an advanced academic program oriented toward fuller mastery is a specific theological discipline, include the following:
Goal 1: Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) degree recipients will demonstrate an advanced understanding of a focused area or discipline in the context of general theological study.
Goal 2:Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) degree recipients will demonstrate a capacity to use research methods and resources in a focused area or discipline, and the ability to formulate productive questions.
