Dr. Karen O’Dell Bullock Was Presented the W.O. Carver Distinguished Service Award at the 2018 Baptist History & Heritage Society Annual Conference

Dr. Karen O’Dell Bullock, Fellow and Director of the Ph.D. program at B. H. Carroll Theological Institute, was awarded the prestigious W.O. Carver Distinguished Service Award at the 2018 Annual Conference of the Baptist History & Heritage Society. The Conference took place from May 31-June 1, 2018, at the Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia. The honor was presented at the Awards Dinner held on Thursday evening, May 31.

The W. O. Carver Distinguished Service Award recognizes and pays tribute to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the cause of Baptist history. Recipients have exhibited rare and unusual dedication to the cause of Baptist history through writing, teaching, denominational service, archival and library development, historical center and society work on national and state levels, communicating Baptist heritage, and interpreting the history of Baptists.

Dr. Gene Wilkes, President of B. H. Carroll Theological Institute, stated, “I am honored to serve with someone like Dr. Karen Bullock who is a recognized scholar and leader in her field. Congratulations, Dr. Bullock! We are proud of you and know many lives are touched by your service to the Lord.”

Dr. Stephen Stookey, Professor of Religion in Church History & Theology and Director of Online Religion Programs at Wayland Baptist University, remarked, “The Baptist History & Heritage Society has honored my dear friend, Dr. Karen O’Dell Bullock, with the organization’s highest honor, the W.O. Carver Distinguished Service Award. I can think of no person more deserving of this honor among Baptist historians.”

Here are other words that people have used to describe Karen Bullock:… she shaped so much of who I am; she is a mentor and friend who embodies dignity and grace; she embodies the best that the W. O. Carver Award recognizes; she encouraged us to strive for God’s best; she is a true historian.

Dr. Karen Bullock is most at home in the classroom, having taught at the undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels for more than thirty-five years. She earned the M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where she taught Christian History and Baptist Heritage for fifteen years. She also directed the Ph.D. program as Associate Dean of the School of Theology and, since 2004, has served in the same roles at Dallas Baptist University (2004-2007) and B. H. Carroll Theological Institute in Irving, Texas (2007-present). Fascinated about all areas of Christian heritage, she is especially passionate about missions, Baptist history, the persecuted church, and justice.

She also serves on two Commissions of the Baptist World Alliance: the Freedom and Justice Division’s Religious Freedom Commission, and as Vice-Chair of the Baptist Heritage and Identity Commission of the Mission, Evangelism, and Theological Reflection Division.

Karen lives in Granbury, Texas, with her husband John. They have two grown and married children and six grandchildren, ages twelve and under.
